The Danger of Elevated Uric Acid during Pregnancy
Having high levels of uric acid is commonly associated in people having gout, which is considered a form of arthritis. People should be aware, however, that having elevated uric acid in pregnancy is also crucial. Pregnant women with high levels of this acid can be at risk of both diabetes and gestational hypertension.
What is the danger of high uric acid?
The body produces an important compound called purine. Purine is a crucial part of the human system because it is broken down into uric acid. This natural process helps in maintaining the normal level of uric acid in the body. The kidneys are the one that excrete most of this acid from the body through urine. When the body has abnormal levels of this acid, the kidneys may not be able to efficiently remove it from the body which leads to the accumulation of this in the blood. This can cause hyperuricemia or even gout.
What’s the effect to pregnant women?
If women have an elevated uric acid in pregnancy, there is a higher risk for them to experience complications. During the first 20 weeks, high uric acid levels can put women at risk of preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.
Preeclampsia is a complication during pregnancy where an expected mother can have hypertension or high blood pressure. This can damage organ systems, and the most commonly affected are the kidneys.
Another risk caused by elevated uric acid in pregnancy is gestational diabetes. In this case, the body is unable to produce or properly use the needed amount of the hormone insulin which helps in regulating the blood sugar.
Danger of the effects
With the said complications, the unborn baby can also develop high blood sugar because the increased level of glucose in the bloodstream can enter the placenta. The body naturally burn off the excess glucose for energy, but in this situation, it turns to fat which is stored on the baby’s body. Such condition can bring various health problems to the unborn child. This includes difficulty in breathing after birth and higher chances for becoming obese. More serious effects can also be having Type 2 diabetes.
If the mother experiences preeclampsia, this can lead to a complicated delivery. If this condition is not treated as soon as possible, it can have more serious complications or can even be fatal both for the mother and the baby.
A woman should seek professional health care especially during the early stages of pregnancy. People can have higher chances of having an elevated uric acid in pregnancy due to obesity. It is advisable to have a healthy weight before pregnancy. Regularly eat healthy and nutritious food, and keep an active routine (with the guide of a doctor). It is better to prevent complications during these crucial stages.
These are the major dangers with elevated uric acid in pregnancy. Families and individuals should be more aware of this condition because the affected parties will not just be one but both the mother the child.
